Buying Guide - Car Seat Glossary

ISOFIX:

A type of car seat safety system. An ISOFIX base fixes into your car and stays put. You then click your child’s car seat into and out of the fixed ISOFIX base every time you need to. It is more secure than a seat belt, is it ensures your car seat is fixed more securely and therefore more safely too.

First stage car seat:

The car seat you’ll use from birth. There are two types, those that can be used until around 15 months old (85 cm) and those that are adaptable so can be used right through until they’re around 4 years old (105cm tall).

Next stage car seat:

Car seat suitable once your baby reaches a certain height, which usually occurs around 15 months.

From birth car seat:

Car seats suitable for newborns.

Infant carrier:

A name for a type of From Birth car seat. Features a handle, hence the name. Rear-facing. Suitable for newborns. Can be used until they’re 85cm tall (usually around 15 months.)

Multi-stage car seats:

Car seats that can be adapted as your little one grows, so they span different stages of your little one’s development and fit in more than one car seat type.
