Having a Second Baby? Here's What You’ll Need

Preparing for a second baby can be an exciting time. You’re choosing to grow your family, and your little one is soon going to be gaining a sister or brother. But whether your first born is still in nappies or they’re already at nursery, it’s going to be a big adjustment for them as well as you.

So, we’re here with some helpful advice, tips and products that’ll make life as a parent of two that little bit easier.

At-home essentials with two children

When you’ve got a newborn in one arm and a toddler hanging off the other, prepping bottles and changing nappies can feel challenging. So, being able to put one of your little ones down in a safe place will make the world of difference. Our 3-in-1 Bug baby seat is perfect for families with two children. It can be used from 3 months as a floor seat for baby, and up to 3 years as a feeding booster seat, so you can alternate between your little ones to make it work for you.

Being able to put your newborn down to nap by your side is also key to an easier life. Not only does it mean you can be where your toddler one is, but it gives you total peace of mind that your littlest one is snoozing safely whilst you get on with what you need do. Our Lua bedside crib can be used by the side of your bed for safer co-sleeping, but you can also lift off the bassinet to move it around your home for daytime naps. So, whilst you and your toddler snuggle up on the sofa with their favourite movie, your newest addition can sleep soundly and safely by your side.

Travelling with two children

Getting out and about with two little ones can feel daunting at times, but there are plenty of tricks to make it a bit easier. If you want to push both of your babies at the same time, a twin buggy can be a lifesaver. But if you’re after something a little more streamlined, you can attach a buggy board to your pushchair that your toddler can stand on whilst you push your new addition. It’ll be fun for them, and easier for you, too.

If you prefer to keep your hands free whilst you’re out and about, a baby carrier or sling is perfect for carrying your newborn. Not only does it mean they stay close to you, but you’ll have the freedom to hold your toddler’s hand or follow them around the playground whilst they explore. Our range of carriers even include styles that you can use on your back with bigger babies – so you can even wear your first born whilst you’re pushing the baby in your pram.

When it comes to hitting the road, you’ll need different types of car seats for your children. Whilst your newborn will need a Group 0+ car seat, it might be time for your older child to upgrade to a junior car seat.

Big brother or sister-to-be gifts

Having a new little brother or sister can be a big change for little ones. They’ll suddenly have to share their time with someone else who needs just as much love and attention as they do, and you might find that they’ll need a few extra cuddles during those early weeks and months. To encourage your first born to bond with their new sibling, a brother or sister-to-be gift might help. A new toy or a special new outfit to celebrate the new arrival makes the perfect big sister or big brother gift, and to help seal the deal, they could even gift their new sibling one of our ‘little brother’ or ‘little sister’ outfits in return.

Our top tip? Give them time

Every little one is different. Some big brothers and sisters might adore their new sibling as soon as they lay eyes on them, and others might take a little longer to warm up – especially during that newborn phase when they aren’t able to share a smile or a giggle with them. Giving your toddler lots of extra snuggles and plenty of reassurance will help, and you could even involve them in helping out by asking them to fetch a clean muslin, or give the new baby a comforter when they’re fussing. Most importantly, try not to be too hard on yourself during this phase. Given time, your eldest will adjust to the change, and your two little ones will soon be best friends for life.
