Dreaming of Baby: Weeks 15-16

Baby is growing fast, and exciting firsts may be just around the corner.

15–16 weeks pregnant: what to expect
The in-between weeks: a growing baby, a growing bump and maybe a first flutter.

Fifteen weeks pregnant can feel like an exciting turning point. With your first scan behind you and the 20-week scan on the horizon, there is plenty happening in between. Your bump may be starting to show, you might soon feel a first flutter and, inside, your baby is growing and developing every single day.

How does your body change at 15–16 weeks pregnant?

You may notice your usual clothes beginning to fit a little differently around now — a lovely reminder of all the changes taking place. The hairband-through-the-buttonhole jeans trick can buy you a little more time, while soft leggings and stretchy favourites can help you stay comfortable.

Every bump grows at its own pace. Some mamas-to-be have a definite little bump by now, while for others it is still barely noticeable. If this is not your first pregnancy, your bump may appear a little sooner. And if you decide it is time for maternity jeans, that extra comfort can feel like a real treat.

You may also start to feel more like yourself as the first-trimester fog begins to lift. Energy levels vary, though, so there is no pressure to feel as if you are suddenly glowing. Tiredness, sickness, headaches or heartburn can still come and go — be kind to yourself and take each day as it comes.

How is your baby developing at 15–16 weeks pregnant?

At 15 weeks, your baby is around the size of an apple, growing to roughly the size of an avocado by 16 weeks — a lot of growth in just a short space of time.

There is an extraordinary amount happening inside that tiny body. Their arms and legs are moving, their hands can form little fists and they can even make funny faces. Fine, downy hair called lanugo is beginning to cover their body, while eyebrows and eyelashes are starting to grow — amazing when you stop to think about it.

From around 16 weeks, your baby may begin to hear your voice. By the time they are born, it could already be one of their favourite and most familiar sounds.

When will you feel your baby move for the first time?

There is another wonderful first to look forward to around this stage: feeling your baby move.

If this is not your first pregnancy, you may recognise those earliest flutters from around 16 weeks. Some first-time parents feel something this early too, although it is completely normal not to feel anything until after 20 weeks. Timing can also depend on where your placenta is — if it is in front of your baby, little kicks have further to travel. If anything is worrying you, your midwife is always there to offer reassurance.

When it does happen, you may not immediately know what you felt. Was it a tummy gurgle or your baby moving? Then it happens again — and suddenly you might realise you have just had your first little hello from the inside.

Dreaming about your baby

As your baby grows, it can be lovely to imagine all the little details. Who will they look like? Will they have your eyes or your partner's hair? What might their personality be like? And what will you call them? Maybe you already have a running list of baby names on your phone.

You might also find yourself happily picturing life with your baby. Perhaps you have started saving beautiful nursery ideas, taking a second look at a pram you love or imagining how your home will change to welcome its newest little arrival.

And if this is not your first baby, you might be imagining that special first meeting with their big brother or sister — whether it brings an instant cuddle, curious questions or a wonderfully honest reaction.

Starting to shop for your baby

You may not be ready to buy anything just yet, but it can be exciting to start exploring. Pop into a Mamas & Papas store to browse pushchairs, cots and tiny sleepsuits, gather nursery inspiration and begin discovering what feels right for your growing family.

Booking your antenatal classes

Around now can be a great time to think about booking NCT antenatal classes. Many parents book at around 16 weeks because local courses can fill up. You can bring your partner, a family member or a friend, and the five sessions cover labour and birth, feeding and life with a newborn — helping you feel informed and supported as the weeks go by.

You will also meet other local parents whose babies are due around the same time. These early connections can grow into a brilliant support network — people to message during a 3am feed, meet for coffee after a sleepless night or turn to when you are wondering, “Is everyone else's baby doing this too?”

Your 16-week midwife appointment

You will usually see your midwife again at around 16 weeks. As well as checking your blood pressure and urine and discussing any screening results, they will check how you are feeling, offer support and answer any questions you have.

Your next big milestone is getting closer too: the 20-week scan, an important opportunity to check on your baby's development and see how much they have grown.

For now, there are plenty of smaller firsts to enjoy: the first glimpse of a bump, perhaps a tiny flutter, a nursery inspiration board filling up with ideas you love, or simply catching yourself picturing your baby as part of your family.

These weeks may feel like a gentle pause between milestones, but they are filled with wonderful changes, growing anticipation and new moments to treasure.
